Mayan Girl

The community we help is in Santa Barbara situated 7'545 feet above sea level and has a population of more then 23'000 inhabitants, of whom 94% are Maya Indians. The level of poverty is 96.88% and 66.45% of these live in extreme poverty. The level of alphabetism amounts to 57% for the men and 34% for the women. The local economic activity is based on the culture of corn by traditional methods, and therefore, low yields. Beans and coffee are also produced. The lack of technical knowledge forces the people to work as manual labourers on the big properties of the region. They receive very low salaries, with which they cannot survive.
